While hiking through provincial parks I often find myself photographing root systems of trees, with the intention of someday doing a painting.
I have various sketches and paintings of roots, but nothing that really captures what draws me to them. I find it fascinating how a tree's roots will work their way around solid rock to find a place to hang on.
The piece that I'm currently working on, titled "Familial Roots" is a grouping of trees that physically support each other through the root system; a metaphor for family members who stand apart in life, yet are supported by their roots. The painting shown here was done to work out some of the problems the larger piece is posing. As soon as the painting is done I'll get it posted.
